The Pure FX Hot Rub, stocked at ThreeSixty Osteopathy, is a carefully researched, New Zealand produced product specially formulated to provide relief from pain. You can use it before or after exercise by rubbing it on the desired muscle. Pure FX Hot Rub creates a warming sensation to loosen up tired, fatigued, stiff, or over worked muscles.

We use it at the clinic for our patients, to give really tight, sore muscles an extra bit of help, to try to get them to relax a little bit quicker.

How does it work?

The heating action from the cream causes blood capillaries in the skin to open, and therefore, more nutrients from the blood are free to flow to the nearby tissues. Add to this the warmth from the practitioner’s hands, and the friction caused by rubbing the muscle itself, and you’ve got a great formula for a quick muscular response.

The cream produces a heating feeling, although technically won’t cause the skin itself to increase in temperature to the degree of warmth it feels like. The menthol does stimulate nerve endings produces an effect that essentially over-rides the stimulation coming from the pain receptors – kind of like if you bang yourself, mum always used to “rub it better”. This uses something called the ‘Pain Gate’ theory. (Ask Holly if you want to know more – it’s fascinating stuff). It helps the brain ‘ignore’ the pain sensation and replaces it with a feeling of warmth (and comfort).

Why is this important?

With this cold weather we’ve been having, the team at ThreeSixty want to give you every tip we can think of to avoid injuring your muscles. So not only will the deep heat create a warming effect to the muscles and skin, the effects of massaging it on will help prepare your muscles for the sport you’re about to partake in.

Do your muscle next some extra help?

If you are prone to really tight muscles, we’ve got an extra little trick up our sleeves for you. Take a hot water bottle or a pre-heated wheat bag with you to the game, and apply it to the tightest muscular area pre-warm up. This way the muscles are a bit warmer before you even start.

Heat applied to the body directly has been proven to penetrate up to 3cms into the muscles. Enough to warm up the top layer in most cases (e.g. calves). Warmer muscles = flexible muscles with more ability to stretch. Hence reducing the chance of injury.

If you want to check out the research yourself, it was one by Draper et al. in 1998. They heated the Triceps muscles of patients with hot packs for fifteen minutes, and then checked their temperature with a needle probe (under anaesthetic) They found an average increase of 3.8˚C at a depth of one centimetre, and .78˚ at three centimetres.

Pure FX Hot Rub contains no nasties:
Beeswax, Coconut Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Plant derived Emulsifying Compounds, Oils of Camphor, clove, Wintergreen, Eucalyptus, Lemongrass, Menthol, Vit E.
