Did you know - it is prohibited for any registered health professional (Doctors, Dentists, Osteopaths, Chiropractors, Physiotherapists) to have testimonials relating to treatment they've provided on their websites? Here's why registered medical professionals cannot advertise comments, testimonials and feedback relating to ailments and specific aches and pains, from our customers....


As registered osteopaths, we are governed by the Ministry of Health's HPCA - Health Practitioners' Competence Act, and the Medicines Act 1981. In section 58 (1) (c) (iii) of the Medicines Act 1981, a testimonial is defined as "an uncontrollable anecdotal report of the beneficial effect of a product or treatment of one individual or a class of persons." The reasoning behind this is that anecdotes (or stories) do not have the relevant objective scientific indicators, and may be misleading to the public. These stories also may not be transferable to the population as a whole, and may only relate to the individual making the claim. The Medicines Act 1981 and HPCA exist to protect the public from regulated health professionals, and therefore must take this stance to prevent biased or untrue claims being made throughout the medical professions.


Also, subject to section 60 of the Medicines Act 1981, "no person shall publish, or cause or permit to be published, any medical advertisement that directly or by implication claims, indicates or suggests that a method of treatment advertised has beneficially affected the health of a particular person". What's more, we are also bound by both the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) and the NZ Osteopathic Council's Code of Ethics. The latter states that "osteopaths must ensure these advertising standards are complied with, and should also be aware of their obligations under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, the Fair Trading Act 1986 and the Health and Disability Commissioner (HDC) Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers' Rights".

So, although we cannot tell you any feedback, comments or compliments from previous customers about their specific aches and pain, we can assure you that we do things properly here, according to all rules, regulations and guidelines.
